Borneo Bound on Raleigh

John Minary has been appointed the official photographer for Operation Raleigh's expedition to Borneo in June 2010.

John underwent a rigorous selection process including the submission of his portfolio and a London interview, and is proud to have been appointed to such a prestigious role. “It is the opportunity of a lifetime and I can’t wait to get out there and live a dream” said John following the formal offer of the role.
Operation Raleigh is now in its 25th year and is aimed provides expeditions and volunteer projects abroad for people taking a gap year, career break, retirement or time out from education or employment.
The Raleigh mission in Borneo since 2003 has been in Sabah, North Borneo, where they have run more than 20 programmes aimed at challenging young people to experience and protect the pristine conservation areas and live life off the usual tourist trail amongst the indigenous population.
The appointment provides John with the opportunity to photograph one of the world’s most bio diverse environments, with animals ranging from Orang-utan, the diminutive Sun Bear and Pigmy Elephants.
Borneo is the third largest island on planet Earth and is covered in equatorial rainforest. The diversity of flora has to be seen to be believed, with pristine rainforest and a host of exotic colourful plants.
“I am so excited about my appointment. This really is an unbelievable opportunity for me to experience life outside my normal comfort zone. I am so looking forward to being able to capture and record some of the diverse culture in this beautiful country.”
John leaves for Borneo in June 2010 and the expedition is scheduled for 13 weeks.
